Peter Jarvis, Telecoms Manager at the University of York, is responsible for a PABX network of approaching 9,000 Voice Extensions, covering both University Admin staff and Students.

Voice Platforms in use at York are predominantly Siemens iSDX, Realitis and Hicom, the largest two Switches being co-located within the ‘Heslington West’ campus.

Connections typically radiate from there to additional platforms within other sites of the University over a combination of Copper, private Fibre and Carrier-provisioned circuits.

Amongst the many and complex inter-departmental and College links within the total Voice Network, Peter is using Metrodata's FC1X00 family E1 Fibre converters to connect switches with 60 channel DPNSS circuits across the University’s private Fibre network between the iSDX switch at Heslington West and a Hicom 300E at the largest of the University's colleges, Halifax. The same approach has been chosen to connect a Realitis switch at the University's rapidly developing new campus at 'Heslington East'.

Peter is aware of Metrodata’s 'Emux' platform, used by similar organisations for multiple E1/ISDN-30 Voice Trunk Connections (Emux supports 4, 8 or 16 2Mbps Trunk connections over single or dual redundant fibres for resilience) but is confident that he has sufficient spare capacity to offer resilience today by using discrete pairs of FC1X00 E1 Fibre converters for each of the Fibre Trunk links.
